Why did Milieudefensie start a new climate case against Shell?
- The science is crystal clear: there is no room for new oil and gas field drilling. Even if all the oil and gas is extracted from existing fields, the earth is already warming well beyond 1.5 degrees.
- The Court of Appeal has ruled in the first climate case against Shell that new oil and gas fields might be at odds with the Paris Agreement.
- Yet Shell has 700 new oil and gas fields in the pipeline worldwide, according to new research by Milieudefensie and Global Witness.
- If Shell stopped approving and developing new fields, it would prevent 36 times the emissions of the entire Netherlands.
Shell is in breach of its legal duty of care due to its continued investment in new oil and gas fields. And also due to its inadequate climate policy for the period 2030-2050. In short: Shell has no plan at all how to reach net zero emissions in 2050. The already ongoing climate case at the Supreme Court covers Shel's climate policy up to 2030. This new climate case also covers the period up to 2050.
We demand Shell:
- To stop its investments in new oil and gas fields.
- To align its emissions reductions (scope 1,2 and 3) with 1.5°C from 2035 up to 2050.
